Orthodox Doctors are concerned with ascertaining the particular disease that a patient may have, but Holistic Doctors are more concerned with finding out what type of person has that disease. A Holistic Practitioner obtains details from the patient of not only their symptoms, but as much as possible about their background. This will include their lifestyle, diet, mental outlook, and ambitions as well as their medical history.
Disease is seen as a consequence of a deeper or more general imbalance. In Holistic Medicine, mind and body are not regarded as separate organisms and there is an understanding that emotional states affect health and wellbeing. There is a strong emphasis upon preventative approaches as Holistic Medicine is aimed at eliminating the causes of illness or strengthening the body's resistance to disease, whereas conventional medicine is largely concerned with the suppression and control of its symptoms. Patients are therefore usually seen on a regular basis, whether or not they feel unwell.
Holistic Doctors may also use other therapeutic modalities, such as Homeopathy, Nutrition, Naturopathy, Herbalism, Acupuncture or Massage. Their aim generally is to use pharmaceutical intervention only if essential.
