How I can help you to regain your energy, vitality and wellness
In my role as a naturopath, I aim to help you to discover your path to illness and how you can correct this with diet and lifestyle adjustments which are paced to your needs and abilities, along with specific herbal, nutritional and homeopathic supplements which may be required to speed up the healing process.
I am university qualified in naturopathy, obtained an advanced diploma in herbal medicine and have a previous background in a paramedical profession. My specialty areas are hormonal imbalances, stress and mood disorders, however as everything is interconnected, consideration of what’s happening in the whole body is required. For instance, stress is a major contributing factor in many illnesses as it affects all major body systems including digestion, hormones, the nervous, immune and cardiovascular systems. It increases damage to cells through oxidation and inflammation, and increases the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. So by dealing with the stress through stress management techniques, better diet and herbs or nutrients to help you cope with your stress more easily, you will find that not only your major symptom/s but other symptoms you may not have realised were connected, will also improve.
My commitment to you is to provide a quality service based on finding the causes of your health issues and putting together a treatment regime aimed at not only relieving symptoms but also dealing with these underlying causes. I do work together with other health professionals including doctors, where required. I also have a commitment to being as informed as possible about new research and am continuously upgrading my knowledge by reading literature and attending seminars and conferences. Despite the general lack of knowledge by medical professionals about nutritional and other natural treatments for illness, there is much research available on these, although finding it sometimes proves to be a challenge. Treatments which I suggest are based on solid scientific research as well as sound naturopathic principles, which are in turn based on an understanding of human physiology.
Consultations:
Your initial consultation will be predominantly devoted to finding out as much information as possible relating to your complaint/s - a sort of fact-finding mission which helps me to work out the best protocol for you. Prior to your visit you will be asked to complete an extensive questionnaire, mainly in the form of tick-boxes for simplicity, which will provide me with a good history of your health. During the consultation I will ask further questions and may perform a few tests such as zinc status, blood pressure, bioimpedance (cellular health) analysis, finger prick test for gluten or Candida antibodies, or urine test for gut bacterial imbalance or heavy metals. I may also request you see your doctor for some blood tests and/or request other laboratory tests such as a salivary hormone test, hair analysis for mineral and heavy metal levels, organic acids for metabolic disorders, stool analysis for digestive related problems or neurotransmitter testing for mood disorders. Tests required will be determined by your current health problems. Depending on time allowed, I may also discuss some dietary and nutritional strategies during this visit.
During your second consultation I will discuss any required diet and lifestyle changes in more detail with you and work out how these can be implemented so they are manageable for you, as well as other treatment options including herbal and nutritional supplements. Consideration of your budget is also taken into account.

Why Choose Natural Therapies and How Do They Work?
Your body has such incredibly sophisticated mechanisms for maintaining the balance, called homeostasis, and therefore good health. It is programmed to automatically do this no matter what. Great examples are the way it intuitively heals a cut finger or broken bone. The age-old naturopathic philosophy that all chronic disease is a result of nutrient deficiency and/or toxicity remains to this day true. It is only when the nutrients required are no longer available or toxic substances interfere with nutrient availability or with natural processes, such as interference with hormones, that you develop chronic illness. There are many ways in which diet and lifestyle contribute to this. So therefore it is clearly obvious that to maintain good health or reverse illness, you must provide the correct internal environment. A simple analogy is a car which has been filled with the wrong type of fuel; you will expect poor performance.
Natural therapies, no matter what modality, aim to support your body to heal itself, as it is designed to do. They aim to provide the correct environment for this to occur. A healthy diet and nutrient supplements supply the raw materials for the thousands of chemical reactions occurring inside your body every day. Herbs, most of which have been used as natural medicine for thousands of years, may stimulate certain organs to work more efficiently and/or provide specific nutrients to support their regeneration. Herbs and nutrient supplements are extremely safe and without the side-effects associated with prescription drugs, when used under supervision of a qualified naturopath and herbalist. When used in this manner, they are able to treat the cause of your illness, rather than simply masking the symptoms. Therefore, unlike prescription drugs, you will generally only need to take herbs and nutrients for a limited period of time, after which you may just need a low maintenance dose of nutrients. Unfortunately it is difficult today to obtain all your nutritional needs from food. This is because of the way food is grown with synthetic fertilizers deficient in many nutrients and which usually also contain toxic substances including the toxic heavy metal cadmium. Use of chemicals such as herbicides, fungicides and pesticides, harvesting fruits and vegetables before they ripen, cold storage, processing, refining and other unnatural practices also means that the food you eat today is much more toxic and nutrient deficient than that eaten by your parents and grandparents. Every day you are exposed to a cocktail of toxic chemicals from your food, water, environment, toiletries and cosmetics which causes your body to use much higher levels of nutrients to cope with and eradicate them. Stress also increases the amounts of nutrients required by your body and lost in your urine.
Are you not feeling 100% healthy and yet have been tested and told there is nothing wrong?
If you are like many clients who come to me, you will know you’re not feeling 100% but your doctor may have been unable to find anything wrong or you may have been simply offered a prescription as a cure-all. Often the impact of stress on health or how to manage it is not understood. Although there are usually multiple causes of illhealth, hormonal imbalances are often involved.
Endocrinologist Dr Scott Isaacs, in his book ‘Hormonal Balance’ (2002) states the following:
“Doctors learn about hormonal disorders in medical school, as they learn about so many other things. But the medical school curriculum stresses that hormonal disorders are usually rare. Not only is this not true, but it does a disservice to endocrinologists, who study hormones and hormonal disorders, and patients who are told that the problem lies elsewhere. Medical schools will teach about hormonal disorders in their extreme cases but fail to teach about less severe cases of the same disorders.
In real life, hormonal disorders can occur in many ranges and be due to many things. …..
In med school, the blood test is emphasized as the be-all and end-all. Symptoms are brushed aside; other tests aren’t considered as seriously. But tests can be wrong. Many people with hormonal problems can have normal blood test results.”
Other common problems which are generally not investigated include toxicity resulting from heavy metals which may result in your body not being able to use its nutrients properly, and nutrient deficiencies often resulting from a combination of factors including digestive problems, stress and incorrect diet.
Is stress causing your fatigue, anxiety, mood swings, hormonal imbalances and weight gain?
Are you succumbing to today’s lifestyle which is placing incredible pressure on virtually everybody with increased demands at school and work, increased activities available to be pursued, and immense marketing pressure on you to buy more, bigger and better products? Do you feel like you’re on a treadmill and unable to get off?
You may be like many of my clients who present with a multitude of health problems resulting from the stress of daily life, without realising how stressed you actually are, or the silent and deadly effects of long-term stress. You, like most people may perceive only major life events such as divorce, death or moving house as causing stress, and ignore the chronic daily hassles which can actually be just as detrimental to your health in the long term. Simply being busy all the time is also a stress on your body. By not taking time out to relax on a daily basis you allow the stress response to be switched on for too long, resulting in hormonal and other imbalances. Stress may cause insomnia, adding to the vicious cycle. You may also be unwittingly adding to your stress because of poor diet and other habits. Unfortunately these keep you on an endless rollercoaster ride of low and high mood and energy cycles.

to break out of the vicious cycle!
Chronically high levels of stress hormones result in interference to your production of thyroid, sex and growth hormones, and the hormone insulin, responsible mainly for blood sugar management and protein synthesis. This increases your risk of developing diabetes type II, but prior to this you may develop a condition known as metabolic syndrome, where your cells become less responsive to insulin and your blood glucose and triglyceride (fat) levels rise. This usually goes undiagnosed. You may gain weight around the abdomen because the fat cells there are more responsive to the stress hormone cortisol. If your thyroid hormone level is low, you may feel fatigued and gain weight easily because thyroid hormones regulate your metabolism. Blood tests are unfortunately not always sensitive to thyroid hormone changes, so you may have been told that your thyroid hormone level is normal. Another possible cause of your fatigue is the high level of cortisol interfering with the functions of insulin and preventing glucose getting into your starving cells.
When your levels of stress hormones (particularly cortisol) stay high for extended periods they interfere with production of your nervous system messengers (called neurotransmitters), particularly serotonin and dopamine, and contribute to irritability, agitation, anxiety and depression. They also damage parts of your brain responsible for memory and for controlling stress hormone levels, which allows them to gradually increase and cause your brain to stay in a state of hyperarousal. This in turn prevents you from being able to relax and contributes to depression and insomnia. Low levels of thyroid hormones are also a well-known cause of depression.
Stress, PMT, Menopausal and other hormonal symptoms
What do PMT and menopausal symptoms have in common? Chronic stress interferes with normal hormone production during the reproductive years and depletes the adrenal glands responsible for hormone production around and after menopause. Contrary to what you may have been lead to believe, PMT symptoms are not normal but rather an indication of hormonal imbalances. If you suffer from PMT and other symptoms related to female hormones, including menopausal hot flushes, sweats, depression and other symptoms, you will be happy to know that much can be done to relieve these without having to resort to the pill or HRT, which will in the long-term actually exacerbate the hormonal imbalances.
An excess of the oestrogen hormones (there are 3) relative to the hormone progesterone is a major contributing factor to most premenstrual, menstrual and menopausal symptoms. Oral or other contraceptives (patches, injections, IUDs) prevent you from ovulating and having the subsequent normal peak of progesterone which is required to balance out the effects of your oestrogens. Your exposure throughout life to many chemicals with hormonal action from a variety of sources such as in food and water contaminated by pesticides, herbicides and fungicides, from plastics, paints, household cleaning products, cosmetics, toiletries and chemicals in the workplace also contributes to this imbalance. Many of these chemicals have an oestrogenic action and scientists have discovered in the last 10 years that these chemicals in minute amounts which on their own have no hormonal effect, do in fact have a significant hormonal effect when added together at these extremely low doses. Virtually all new synthetic chemicals (about 100,000) produced since the second world war have never been tested for their hormonal effect in humans (or animals) and many are produced by the millions of tons per year!
(For more information visit www.ewg.org for general information about toxic chemicals
and www.naturallyhealthy.mionegroup.com for information on certified organic cosmetics and toiletries)
If you have a high stress level and a poor diet, the antagonistic effect of cortisol to insulin may also contribute to polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), causing you to have a high testosterone and possibly high oestrogen levels, and cysts on the ovaries. This in turn may cause you to have absent, very long or disrupted menstrual cycles, infertility and unpleasant side effects such as acne, excess facial and body hair. Unfortunately many women with PCOS are needlessly prescribed drugs which have serious side-effects including birth defects in babies. Natural therapies for PCOS include some simple dietary and lifestyle changes as well as safe, effective herbal remedies.
Being overweight from poor diet, inactivity, stress and other lifestyle factors can cause your hormonal imbalances while hormonal imbalances can cause you to gain weight and have difficulty losing it, so you may find yourself in a vicious cycle.
What can be done to help correct hormonal imbalances?
By taking a thorough history and acquiring test results including salivary hormone testing, I am able to develop a targeted approach to correcting your hormonal imbalances. This may involve dietary and lifestyle changes, herbal and nutritional supplements. As a naturopath and herbalist, I have at hand the best quality nutrients and herbs which are known to assist in correcting specific hormonal imbalances. With a choice of liquid herbs, I can select and blend those most suitable for your particular needs. I also have a selection of tabletted formulae on hand. Because nutritional deficiencies are often a major contributing factor in hormonal imbalances, by using nutritional supplements together with herbs, in addition to changes to your diet and lifestyle, you will generally start to notice improvements within a few weeks. Since these are supporting your body to correct the imbalances naturally, depending on the severity of your complaints, it may sometimes take 3 to 6 months before balance is totally restored, however you will notice gradual improvements. Why HRT is not the ideal answer
Hormones are the chemical messengers responsible for regulating every aspect of your metabolism. It is therefore very important that the amount of these are carefully controlled, otherwise the delicate balance will be disrupted and homeostasis, the state of healthy balance cannot be maintained, causing you to feel unwell. Your body has what are called positive and negative feedback mechanisms to control this. You have sensors which measure the amount of hormones circulating in your blood and when they get to a certain level, hormone production is usually reduced or switched off. This is called a negative feedback mechanism, the most common type. Your cells are also able to vary their response to a hormone by increasing or reducing the number of receptors for that particular hormone. Your hormonal balance may be easily disrupted, as explained previously, by stress, drugs (prescription and other drugs) and other factors.
Every one of us is an individual with regard to biochemistry, which has been influenced by our genes, our exposure to chemicals, heavy metals, our diet and lifestyle. Often when hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is prescribed there is no prior testing performed and a one-size-fits-all approach is used. Synthetic hormones purchased with a prescription from a regular pharmacy do not have the same molecular structure as your own hormones and are often given at a much higher dose than your body would normally produce, resulting in different actions to your own hormones and possible further imbalances. Sometimes because the doses are much higher than normal, your cells may reduce the number of receptors available and the effect of the HRT is reduced, causing you to need a higher dose for the same effect.
You can’t stay on HRT forever, and when stopping, many women experience withdrawal symptoms, since their bodies have stopped or drastically reduced their own hormone production.
Many women are prescribed synthetic oestrogens with little or no progesterone, ignoring the important balance between these hormones. Even when synthetic progesterones (called progestagens) are included, your risk of breast and endometrial cancer while using these is increased. Recent research indicates that the decline in use of HRT between 2001 and 2003, (after damning research which linked it with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease), is associated with a reduced incidence of oestrogen dependent breast cancer (Medscape Medical News, Dec 2006).
HRT does not correct the underlying cause of your hormonal imbalance: often chronic stress has depleted your adrenal glands which take over production of sex hormones after menopause, so supporting your adrenal glands, supplying nutrients needed for your hormone production and herbs which ease your symptoms, better addresses the cause of the problem while reducing any symptoms you may be experiencing.
Natural’ or ‘bio-identical’ HRT is just another form of HRT - it still does not address the underlying causes of your problems and may also have some of the same disadvantages of synthetic HRT. However, if your test results reveal low progesterone combined with low bone density and increased risk of osteoporosis, bioidentical HRT may need to be considered.
Because hormones like progesterone and DHEA are also used to make other hormones (they act as precursor hormones), it is not possible to predict how your body will use these. For instance, progesterone can be used to make the stress hormone cortisol or testosterone. Salivary hormone tests done on some women using only progesterone cream have often shown a high level of testosterone while the progesterone level is still low. This means that the progesterone has been converted to testosterone rather than being used as progesterone. DHEA can also be converted to testosterone. When the testosterone level is high as a result of using progesterone or DHEA, it can in turn be converted to oestrogens, causing these to become out of range and further exacerbating the oestrogen to progesterone balance.
Herbs, when used under supervision of a qualified practitioner are extremely safe and do not have the side-effects associated with prescription medication. They have been used as natural medicines for thousands of years.
Do you suffer from gut discomfort, bloating, wind, diarrhoea and/orconstipation?
If you suffer from reflux, bloating after meals, wind, discomfort, gut pain, frequent diarrhoea and/or constipation, you are not alone. The causes of these symptoms are varied, however if you’ve had a history of stress or are currently stressed, have been prescribed antibiotics, taken the oral contraceptive pill or other drugs, or eat a poor diet, you are more likely to suffer from these problems.
To rid you of these symptoms it is usually necessary to undergo a carefully planned detoxification program which is carried out in 3 phases. The first phase deals with any imbalance in your gut bacteria and other microbes, and is followed by a gut repair phase. The final phase is designed to help your liver to remove toxic substances from your body. It does this via your gall bladder and gut. It is very important not to do this before the other 2 phases because if your gut is not in good health and your liver dumps toxic substances into it, they may be reabsorbed into the bloodstream. This is why it is not advisable to simply buy a detox package from supermarket, pharmacy or healthfood store because these do not address the first 2 phases. Detoxification is a serious issue and should always be carried out under careful supervision from a qualified practitioner such as myself. I am able to tailor the program to your individual needs and adjust it if required. You may need to stay in one phase longer than other people and you may be more sensitive than somebody else, therefore herb and supplement doses need to be adjusted accordingly. You may also need help with boosting your digestion.
There are several tests I can perform prior to starting a detoxification program which will determine the level of bacterial imbalance you may have and whether or not Candida is a problem in your case. In severe cases I may suggest a comprehensive diagnostic stool analysis which will help to pinpoint the exact cause of your problems. See Other Pathology Testing LINK
Client Testimonials
After 2 years of gynae hassles, feeling flat, and riding an emotional roller-coaster, I can’t explain the relief of feeling my old self again! After 3 months I have more energy, feel more motivated and I’m actually slimming down too! I wish I had “got-around-to-it” sooner. Thank you!
SP
At my first visit to Kris, I was completely exhausted, concerned about my alcohol consumption and feeling the first effects of the onset of menopause. Kris confirmed, by detailed discussion and tests, imbalance and depletion of hormone and nutrient levels, a diet that had become poorer over time, low iron levels and the beginnings of osteoporosis. It all seemed overwhelming at the time but now my diet is unrecognisable, better balanced and more nutritious, and I have the energy to enjoy walking and gardening. In fact, my energy levels have soared! Kris's knowledge of these highly complex hormone and nutrient relationships is beyond me but with comparatively simple and straight forward advice and supplements, she has gently and effectively made the world of difference to my life. Thankyou Kris.
NK
I came to see Kris for premenstrual acne although I had other PMS symptoms, especially bloating which I thought were normal. I was also very stressed. Within 2 weeks my constipation was gone, I was sleeping like a baby and feeling much calmer. Now after 3 months my PMT symptoms have virtually gone and I don't know when my period is coming!
Renata, Mindarie
I visited Kris with hormonal problems after being on the pill for eight years. These included depression, mood swings, migraines + severe PMT. Over 3 months, through dietary changes combined with vitamins + herbal supplements, these symptoms have gradually reduced in severity. My asthma has improved dramatically as well.
Emily, Joondanna.
I came to see Kris for help with my hot flushes and sweats which were becoming quite severe at times and interfering with my sleep. The salivary hormone test showed my adrenals were quite depleted. Kris prescribed herbs for the hot flushes and to boost my adrenals. The hot flushes have virtually gone and my mood and energy levels have improved dramatically as well!
AM, Bayswater
All of life is about providing a balance. I optimised my balance through consulting Kris Kern Naturopath. I found that I wasn't getting the right amounts of energy from the types of good foods I was eating. After consulting Kris I found out a few reasons as to why! So having worked through Kris's solution for myself, I now have an abundance of energy - and have also found my general well-being has improved tremendously in the last few weeks. The body has an innate ability to heal itself. I recommend the consultation of a naturopath to all my friends and family.

Salivary Hormone Testing
Your biochemistry is individual to you, which is why a one-size-fits-all approach is not effective in helping to correct your hormonal imbalances. Hormones can be tested using blood, urine or saliva, however blood tests are invasive and have several disadvantages. Firstly, they are unable to accurately differentiate between your bound hormones - those bound to protein carriers, which are too large to move out of your blood vessels, and your free (unbound) hormones which are able to diffuse out into the tissues, where they may be used by your cells. Also, because the hormone levels in your saliva are much smaller, small changes in your blood hormone levels become more obvious with a saliva test as they are in effect magnified. Saliva tests were developed about 50 years ago and have been used largely for medical and psychological research. They have been available in Australia through 2 accredited laboratories in Melbourne for some years now and are used by some medical professionals. The test is painless and easy – it simply involves spitting into a tube and posting it to the laboratory.
Generally I will test for all 3 of your oestrogens, which must be in the right proportion to each other, as well as progesterone, testosterone, cortisol and DHEAs. By testing a wider range of hormones than would normally be done, I am able to target your herbal and nutritional regime more specifically which means you start to feel better sooner.
Cellular Health Analysis
Also known as Bioimpedance Analysis, Cellular Health Analysis (CHA) is a quick, easy and painless method of finding out various indicators of your cellular and therefore general health. CHA was developed by NASA to monitor the health of its astronauts while in space. It works is by sending a tiny electrical impulse through your body and measuring the resistance/impedance of your cells. Valuable information which I can obtain from this are your intra- and extra-cellular fluid balance, fat to muscle mass ratio, health of your cell membranes and whether inflammation or hormonal imbalances are indicated. It is extremely valuable when monitoring your weight loss to check that you are actually losing fat and not your precious muscle. For healthy aging it is important to maintain the correct fluid balance, have healthy cell membranes, maintain a good muscle mass and minimal fat mass.
Other Pathology Testing
Urinary Oestrone Metabolites is a useful test for finding out what whether your oestrone (one of the oestrogens) is being processed down what is considered a safer pathway by your liver. Oestrone can be altered in 3 ways by your liver and 2 of these are generally considered to promote cell growth, while the other appears to be protective. This is a useful test to do if there is a history of breast cancer in the family or just to be proactive as dietary and other measures can be taken to stear it down the protective pathway.
A Comprehensive Diagnostic Stool Analysis performed by an accredited laboratory is an extensive test which will determine the presence of gut parasites, bacterial imbalance and low levels of stomach acid and digestive enzymes. This can be extremely useful for pinpointing the cause of your problem in cases of poor digestion, nutrient deficiencies, unexplained diarrhoea, gut pain, irritable bowel symptoms and other problems. A test is also available to differentiate whether you have Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis, as natural therapies for for these are slightly different.
A hair mineral analysis is extremely useful for determining your mineral levels in general and whether you have toxic heavy metals present which may be impacting on your body’s ability to use its nutrients properly. Blood tests are not effective for this purpose because your body will get rid of these from the blood as soon as possible and store them in other tissues like hair. Toxic heavy metals may be blocking nutrients from entering your cells or by counteracting their effect, meaning that you need far higher levels of nutrients than normal. Lead and cadmium are also known to have a negative hormonal effect. You may not realise that you have been exposed to these, however they are hidden in many forms, in our food, water and environment and accumulate in your body over your lifetime. Some may have even been transferred from your mother to you during pregnancy.
Urinary iodine testing is the most accurate method for testing your iodine level. If your thyroid function is not optimal, checking your iodine level is extremely important, since iodine is required to make the hormone. Most women appear to have low or low normal levels of this mineral when tested and giving a very low dose of iodine has been shown by several internationally respected doctors to make an enormous difference in how they feel, particularly energy-wise and mentally. Iodine deficiency has also been related to breast cysts and it now appears that iodine may actually have many more functions in the body than originally thought.
An organic acids testuses urine to test for over 40 by-products of different metabolic processes within the body. It can determine some specific nutrient deficiencies and indicate the probable causes of various metabolic problems such as low energy production resulting in fatigue and neurotransmitter (nervous system messenger) imbalances. This is normally only done in more serious cases when the causes of illness are not obvious on other tests. Neurotransmitter testing on its own is also available.
